A Little History
Howlite is by far a more recent kind of Gemstone compared to many others which have been on our planet for millions of years and it was first discovered in 1868 in Nova Scotia, Canada by the mineralogist Henry How and was also named after him.
Sadly and unfortunately due to Howlite being a very absorbent kind of Gemstone, it is often dyed to a bluey-green kind of colour and sold off as fake Turquoise Gemstones (which are more expensive).
Genuine and Natural Turquoise may have slightly similar markings on them like Howlite, however they are more easily identified and recognised as being different from each other.
Here are just a few examples:
- Hardness - Howlite has a hardness rating of 3.5 on the Mohs scale (please see below) and Turquoise has a hardness rating of between 5 and 6 therefore Howlite would scratch more easily than Turquoise.
- Colour - There are many ways to test if Howlite is actually fake Turquoise, but one of these ways is the colour test - *Be careful not to ruin any jewellery you may have, using nail varnish remover (acetone) and adding some onto a cotton bud, then rub the Turquoise Gemstone, if any colour comes off onto the cotton bud, then it is most likely to be Howlite and not Genuine Turquoise.
- Cost - As Turquoise Gemstones are more expensive compared to Howlite, always remember the old adage - "If it's too good to be true, then it probably is".
Mohs Scale: 3.5
(The Scale Number from 1 to 10 given to Gemstones based on their hardness and ability to Scratch another Gemstone)

*As Genuine Gemstones are naturally formed, please be aware that any markings and colours/shades may vary slightly from one Gemstone to another. **All content on Gemstones throughout our website is for informational purposes only, for any health related illness's/conditions, please seek advice from your health care practitioner. |
